Here's looking at you. This uses the new Repro (mesh) workflow in Maya 2016 Extension 2 which allows us to Repro Repros (it will make sense!).
Some clues as to how it was done:
The input mesh on the first MASH (MASH1) network was a small 'sliver' of a sphere. Using an Offset node on the rotation we then created an (you know the cliché) armadillo type sphere. This was then animated to 'blink'.
We then created another MASH network (MASH2) with a Sphere as its input mesh. On the Distribute node we then set its Distribution Type to mesh and dragged the Repro mesh from MASH1 into the Input Mesh slot. This distributed the spheres over the 'armadillo' eyes (Repro1). We then used a Color node to offset the colors on the spheres (you could alternatively do this with several spheres and an ID node).
We then created a third MASH network (MASH3) and used the Repro mesh from MASH 2 as our input mesh. This was set to a Grid distribution, added a Random node to the position and rotation and then used the Time node to randomly offset everything in time.
Created using Maya 2016 Extension 2.
MASH is now an Autodesk product and shipping with Maya 2016 Extension 2.
