Friends Catherine Ryan and Angela Altair sat down over a coffee in Williamstown’s main street in 2003, and wondered if a local festival could ever take off. 2013 saw the festival celebrating a very happy decade of bringing ideas, writers and readers together.
The Williamstown Literary Festival has now grown into one of the country’s most respected wordfests, attracting some of Australia’s best loved authors. The festival is run by a committee of locals, supplemented by contract staff at festival time.
The festival has a strong focus on local participation, with the annual People’s Choice awards showcasing aspiring local writers and poets. The Ada Cambridge Award for Poetry and Prose is run annually with the winners being announced at the festival’s opening. In 2015 we are delighted to be delivering The Young Ada Awards.
There are a number of lead-up events around town, with the festival’s main program held at the Williamstown Town Hall and Library over the weekend of Friday June 12th to Sunday June 14th The program appeals to people of all ages and literary tastes. Events include panels, interviews, author talks, workshops for children, teenagers and adults, readings and storytelling. Writers working in all genres including poetry, novels, non fiction, crime, historical fiction, drama, adventure and sports contribute to a fabulous festival.
As always, we promise you rich literary pickings, loads of laughs and plenty of fun. We look forwarding to welcoming you.
