There’s a lot more to the English naturalist and biologist, Charles Darwin, than once thought. Watson read and analyzed Darwin’s entire collection of books, journals, sketches, personal letters, a biography, and a field guide to the species Darwin found in the Galápagos. What Watson found was surprising – that the concepts outlined in his books on evolution bear a strong resemblance to the concepts behind many puzzles and board games.

The insight Watson uncovered led the artist collective Taylor James to examine the idea of evolution as a game itself–one that, when played to the end, allows the viewer to discover something new and see how we’re all connected. They were further inspired by the notion of exploration and the unique natural beauty of the Galápagos Islands. The result: Evolution: The Game.

About Art with Watson: IBM Watson is a cognitive system that understands, reasons and learns. In the few years Watson has been at work in the world, he’s had one purpose: to augment human ability. To help us make better decisions, do what we do better. Hidden Portraits is a collaboration between Watson and a selection of notable contemporary artists. Those artists used insights uncovered by Watson to create unique and revealing, never-before-possible portraits of influential thinkers. See the art at https://ibm.com/watson/artwithwatson
