Office Depot and AdoptAClassroom.org traveled the country to
uncover stories of teachers going above and beyond. In Calera, Alabama, at Calera High School, they found Brian Copes.

In Copes’ pre-engineering classes, students are taught to push themselves and focus on collaboration in finding innovative solutions to meet real modern problems. In 2012, students from his classes traveled to Honduras, where they fit 14 amputees with prosthetic legs they made in the classroom out of used car parts.

“It’s because my students aren’t jaded by education,” says Copes. “They don’t understand that they’re not supposed to be able to make a knee joint out of an automotive motor mount. They don’t know it’s not supposed to work, therefore they try.”

A true problem solver, Copes is happy to walk alongside his students and together make things work.
