Born and raised in Hawaii, Tryan George began making his first Super 8 films at the age of eight. After graduating from Cornell University, Tryan toured Europe with his rock band, The Dambuilders, promoting their internationally acclaimed record. Upon returning to the states, Tryan moved to New York where he produced two feature films: Rift, which screened in the Dramatic Competition at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival, and Murders and Acquisitions, which he also co-directed.
The following year The Dambuilders asked Tryan to direct the first video off their major label debut. The video for Shrine received much play on MTV, leading Tryan to sign with U.S. and Canadian production companies for music video and commercial representation. From there, Tryan went on to direct over 50 acclaimed music videos that earned multiple award nominations for Best Video and Best Director. His video Innocent for Our Lady Peace was Much Music’s Video of the Year in 2003.
In 1999, Tryan made the seamless transition into the commercial world and scored a hit with his first spot for Bailey’s Irish Cream. He was named a finalist for Saatchi & Saatchi’s First Cut Awards, and was well on his way.
Tryan’s clean minimalist aesthetic combined with fluid pacing is constantly achieved through well-contemplated compositions – a signature style that translates perfectly in the specialized beauty niche. Tryan has set the looks for Pantene all over the globe and over the years, built a repertoire of star-studded beauty advertising that includes directing Eva Mendes for the Pantene brand, Penelope Cruz for L’Oreal, and most recently, Kate Walsh for Garnier.
Today, Tryan maintains his international presence by directing major commercial campaigns around the world, with notable work for other top-tier brands including Sony, Blue Cross, Bailey’s Irish Cream, Colgate, Hugo Boss and IKEA.
