As a child, Matt found comfort and self-expression in imaginary worlds. The young Matt used toys, permanent markers and his dad’s Sankyo Super 8mm film camera to tell these early stories, which often featured vehicular stunts inspired by George Miller's "Mad Max".
This archetypal beginning begot an interest in archetypes as a film student at RMIT in his early 20s, and the high cost of making films in the late 90s made it easy for Matt to steer the focus of his creative energies toward the craft of screenwriting.
After leaving film school, Matt started a production company with his brother and long-time collaborator, Trevor, and cut his directorial teeth on corporate videos and music videos. This paved the way for a transition to directing television commercials, resulting in a string of award-winning spots for brands such as Alfa Romeo, Federation University and Holden Special Vehicles.
It was around this time that one of Matt’s feature-length screenplays caught the attention of legendary Australian film producer, Al Clark, of “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” and “Chopper” fame. Al Clark executive produced Matt’s acclaimed short film, “Flat Daddy”, funded by Screen NSW via its Emerging Filmmaker’s Fund.
“Flat Daddy” opened the Academy Award-accredited St Kilda Film Festival in 2015 and earned Matt a nomination for Best Director. The film went on to screen at the Adelaide Film Festival, Flickerfest and the Palm Springs International ShortFest before being nominated for Best Short Fiction Film at the 5th AACTA Awards. "Flat Daddy" was also named a finalist in the 15th Screen Producers Australia Awards in the inaugural Short Film Production Award category, and was chosen to represent the city of Sydney at the UNESCO Cities of Film event at the Galway Film Centre in Ireland.
While Matt still likes to imagine outlandish vehicular stunts, these days his creative and storytelling impulses are oriented toward the human condition. As evidenced by his body of work, Matt's approach to filmmaking is defined by a capacity for cinematic image-making and the ability to work closely with actors to elicit credible and nuanced performances, while leaving space for the unexpected and the thrilling.
