Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Erik began his filmmaking career at the age of twelve when he made the Super 8 film Stony, an unpolished but enthusiastic tribute to the Rocky franchise. Despite the fact that it was mistakenly shot at a zippy 9-frames-per-second, the film was well received in neighborhood screenings and went on to be featured on the television show Kidsworld on CBS. A lifelong interest in film and television was born. Erik began his grown-up career as an advertising copywriter at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco. There he created award-winning campaigns for Norwegian Cruise Line, Pizza Hut, and Budweiser. Perhaps most notably, he was the creator and voice of the Bud Ice penguin--a deranged, flightless menace who stalked Bud Ice drinkers for many years. Erik’s creepy vocal performance of the penguin singing Strangers in the Night was heard on dozens of spots and played at the home arena of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins to inspire the team. It was at Goodby that Erik wrote the cartoon novel Tales of a Young Urban Failure (Chronicle Books) which became a cult phenomenon in the advertising industry and was optioned by Comedy Central. This inspired a move to Los Angeles where he worked as a creative director for TBWA/Chiat Day while pursuing his interest in film and television. At Chiat he had another award winning run, helping to launch the hit video game title Crash Bandicoot for Sony Playstation. He created some memorable spots for Energizer which landed on Adweek’s Best Spots of the Decade list as well as taking Cannes Gold, One Show, and Clio awards. He began directing commercials in 2003 through Radical Media in Santa Monica. Erik has also written for television, most recently with producer Mike Clements of Chris Hardwick’s Fish Ladder Productions. He has written for HBO’s The Life and Times of Tim, and has created pilots, episodes and sketches for NBC Studios, Conan O’Brien’s Conaco Productions, CBS, Fox, Studios USA, Paramount Television, Universal Television, Tornante, Brillstein Grey Entertainment, Comedy Central and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video. Erik has also written four feature film scripts--one of which he produced and co-directed called No Sleep ‘til Madison, which won the Sundance Channel Emerging Filmmaker Award. He has written and directed short films including Young Artie Feldman, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, won the Grand Jury prize from the AOL online film festival, and was featured at both the American Film Institute and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
