在经历十几年国际4A广告人生涯之后，他于2017年前往美国南加州大学学习电影制作，并获得导演和编剧双学位。自编自导作品《关于诗的第四句》获得尚世影业开发投资电影项目。十二年的4A生涯，廖义源从一名Art direction做到了创意群总监，曾连续三年获得国内最佳美术指导，为香港DDB打造的周大福系列广告赢得香港本土首座D&Ad银铅笔，并连续两年赢得戛纳广告节银奖和多项入围。 经历了从创意人到广告导演这样角色转变的廖义源，觉得后者吸引他的一点是作品从无到有的体验。导演认为自己属于「脑中有清晰思路才能开工」的一类创作者，因此他会在创意基础上更深入挖掘洞察，一切从拥有清晰概念的基础上把情节设计得完整饱满。之前廖义源拍过风格强烈的爆款视频受到大众关注；而19年的方太《光明村》他依据真实故事背景融入了暖心、悬疑和奇幻多种风格让人印象深刻；聚划算《22度的雪》则把一个常规的「白头到老」情感题材拍出了润物无声的细腻…… 为中国银联撰写的《普杰的冬天》，廖义源放弃以往所有经验，用电影叙事结构和视听语言演绎了一个诗意少年“被长大”的故事，14分钟的短片引起大众强烈共鸣，成为19年底刷屏朋友圈和媒体最关注的视频事件。
