Cynical Smile is the Directing moniker for Karl Richter, a Canadian-born, Los Angeles-based Director. After dropping out of art school, he knew motion picture was the best way to use every aspect of ‘art’ to convey emotion in a visual medium. Working his way up through post, he learned the value of mood, pacing and the power of editorial. As he’s stepped behind the camera, he’s used that knowledge with a deft hand to subtly connect to his audience. With an eye for composition and a mind for storytelling, he seeks a cinematic touch on all that he executes. Whether it’s a commercial, a music video, a purely narrative film, abstract or surreal; story is key to its success. Karl is seeking the truth to human emotion and the dynamics of human relationship through the platform of cinema. A love for photography is his ‘quick-fix’ between projects, an outlet for curating and creating visuals, from simple landscapes to a series on public restrooms to be published whenever he gets around to it.
