Narcissists usually are successful, and at first sight they tend to give an impression of fantastic personality, they seem self-sufficient and extremely confident. They are experts in charming. But deep down they are truly unhappy people, who, due to a childhood trauma, are afraid there is something wrong with them. That they don't get to be loved. That's why they try so hard to idolize themselves and devalue their partners at the same time, hoping that if partners believe in their own worthlessness they are more likely to try to improve themselves and less likely to leave. As the result the caring and charming person we spoke of at the beginning of this text becomes arrogant, blunt, and violent. It is crucial to notice this narcissistic personality "split" as soon as possible and resist emotional manipulation. The biggest and most common mistake of a narcissist's victim is to believe the problem is with them, not with the abuser. At this very point victims get their own hand caught in the trap and start to believe the things would go back to the happy times of love and harmony once they try harder. But it's not going to happen, and it is important to understand that.
