SHELTER. A film presenting Saul Nash AW20 in motion.
Inspired by the themes of Nash’s exhilarating AW20 show supported by FashionEast, a performance in which we witnessed individual models being built and dressed by a group of stage hands who at first sight bear a hostile presence but whose role was to actually positively instil confidence as they walked to the end of the catwalk.
With the intention to subvert expectations the duality between fitting in and standing out is ever present in AW20 and proposes the idea that we can choose to take shelter, retreating into imposed social expectations, or transform into the self-sufficient individual we hope to be. These complexities and subtleties of masculinity are informed through Nash’s background as a dancer growing up in London.
SHELTER goes on to further explore these themes of self-embodiment and group empowerment through this 2 minute visual created in collaboration with director & long term collaborator, Emmy nominated Fx Goby.
The film beautifully references the air-like nature of the garments’ designs which derive from an urgent need for fluidity and unapologetic self-expression. Inspired by Nash’s story of self liberation & need for garments to feel like air, Fx Goby reimagines this through a dreamlike motion of floating bodies which proposes a sense of optimism and hope throughout the film.
The film is set over an ethereal score by musician Lafawndah. which creates an uneasy presence as we witness 3 men being uplifted by 2 stage-hands who set them on a journey of levitation until the point they are fully liberated.
