Always dressed in black and wearing dark sunglasses both indoors and out, Zhang Lei gives off a striking impression — much like his powerful yet minimalistic architecture. Not simply architecture for architecture’s sake, Zhang’s work is concerned with the intersection between space and society; architecture and life. His philosophy is that design provides simple and effective solutions for life’s most complicated problems. It’s a belief that is reflected in the details of each of his buildings.

张雷关注的不仅是建筑本身，更多的，是建筑与社会、与人、与生活的关系。没有为设计而设计的的浮夸与炫耀，他坚持以最简单的方式去回应复杂的需求。他的感性在生动细节设计上，他的人文情怀寄寓在他的乡村实践中。严肃与浪漫，这两种对立的特质在他身上同时存在。张雷说，看着设计的图纸慢慢成形，变成真实存在的建筑，他的心中充满幸福感。
