Words can define you, tell your story, define your self-image, and create a certain
perception of you. It's in this relationship and interpretation of words that our journey
with TYPESELF began.
The concept for TYPESELF started with a thought, what if we generated people's portraits
from their written bios? We began tearing apart five typewriters, then through hacking
started to print portraits. We found that coding with conscious writing couldn't really
illustrate the person as a recognizable portrait. The phrases, sentences, and paragraphs that crafted people's autobiographies just didn't create an image of the real person.
So we decided to break down people's writing and deconstruct their words, just like we
did with the machine. By the end stages, we tore apart the words into individual letters
that could be placed individually to illustrate one's portrait. Through that approach,
all the characters were used on different tiny parts of people's faces creating a totally
random effect.
