f°am PRESENTS AUVOTs:
VIRTUAL CAR SCULPTURES PUTTING FUNCTION ON A FUTURIST VECTOR
Beyond fulfilling a tangible need, how can virtual surface simulation contribute to the future of automotive design? An exploration of possible answers to this question with BASF’s Coatings Division led f°am to create AUVOTs, a set of virtual car sculptures that serve as canvases for the interplay of paint, light and body geometry in limitless variations.
Revealing a different character from every angle at a 1:1 scale in a real-time demo tool, the four distinct AUVOT models cater both to concrete client requirements and future design speculations in one shape with two prominent sides. One side resembles a traditional car model, allowing designers and clients to experience how the surface qualities of different colors appear in different lighting environments.
The other side takes on a more experimental shape; a form left unfinished. By transcending the boundary between tangible function and abstract speculation, AUVOTs offer an open invitation to explore the possibilities of surface and simulation design – within and beyond the automotive industry.
In an experimental design showcase, f°am’s sister studio ZEITGUISED developed a set of surface designs that venture further along the vector of car surface customization, towards a future of ad-hoc ownership within service-based mobility.
