There’s a kind of second skin that holds tight against your body when everything else is doing its best to rip the flesh from your bones. Inside the hole, when you slip a foot the world starts to buckle. The concrete track pulls and grates and muddles any tissue daring to stand in its way. Murderous engines tack past your skull at full speeds and you slide out for the edge. Bones break. More bones break…. But thank god for leather, that second skin.
In late February of 2018, we flew towards a frigid winter in search of a once forgotten art…. flat-track motorcycle racing in the great American mid-West. We arrived to find a city socked under a heavy cloud of freezing rain that stretched out far across Lake Michigan. No one cared. They unleashed their bikes by the dozens to run the gauntlet of cement track laced only with soda-syrup. They were warriors, they were daredevils, they were neighbors, and they were family.
It was race night."
