Supporting Artists is a side project we're kicking off based on the idea of 'artist driven technical support'. We take a support question and turn the answer into some tempting eye candy alongside handy hints and tips on the technique.
We're going to host this here for now - mainframe.co.uk/supporting-artists
This one's the first of (hopefully) many. The hope is that these peak your interest in MASH (and other Maya features), encourage a bit of discussion and point both new and experienced Maya users to some of the less obvious features so you can take the techniques and apply them to your own work.
Let's see how it goes!!
Q: Random colours are great but how can I use the Color node to assign specific colours to objects in a MASH network?
A: You can use the UV Tile Settings on the Color node. This is similar to how the UDIMs feature works but instead of using texture maps, ramps to assign specific colours to UV tiles. The beauty of this set up is that you can do it all in one shader meaning common attributes like reflectivity only need to be adjusted in one place.
