As a continuation of the Permission To Explode project, for which we made the teaser film last year, we set about producing the album artwork for the double pack vinyl LP.
Brief
Through conversations with Si Begg we agreed that the printed material should have a departure from the films aesthetic. Some things were to carry over, however, for the purpose of recognition and consistency of creative (the 3D head scan of Si and the inclusion of a physical explosion) but we wanted to pursue a direction that was tailored to print and make the release as desirable as possible to the paying public.
Approach
Our approach was to utilise animation techniques and repurpose these into a highly limited edition run of 100 sleeves, all numbered and signed for by Si. We love the idea of the classic, iconic portrait of the artist on a record sleeve and wanted to play with this from a visual point of view. Our portrait was generated using a dynamic script which generates a simulation of an explosion at random. We built a custom shader that colours polygons according to path lengths and wraps the head with random contours. We hit go and the rest was left to chance… which is exactly what you take when purchasing one, as all copies are sold online and sent out at random.
The resulting 4k images were incorporated into the album artwork and printed on GF Smith 350gsm colourplan at Pureprint, on the HP Indigo 10,000 Digital Press. At time of going to press, this is only 1 of 2 presses in the UK capable of producing a B2 print, which is large enough to wrap a slab of vinyl in one piece.
