Litefeet is a type of street dance originated in Harlem and the Bronx, in the beginning of 2000. It is commonly seen on Subways in New York City, with performances full of flips, hanging off the poles, hat and shoe tricks and fast floaty footwork.
The dance, also known as "getting lite", incorporates other styles like the Harlem Shake, Chicken Noodle Soup, Aunt Jackie, Shuffling and Popping. Today it is being compared to the B-Boying that emerged in the 1980s.
There are some well-known LiteFeet groups: WAFFLE, Brotherhood, 2Real Boyz, Rocket and Demon, to name some.
Dancers have their own kind of music being played along with the dance and the songs are usually fast-paced. Kid the Wiz, AG the Voice of Harlem, DJ Webstar, and Young B are some of the producers specialized in the style.
Today LiteFeet is considered an underground art and dancing on trains is prohibited. Many dancers are being arrested and cops constantly film the performances so there can be proof they were doing something illegal.
This film was shot in June of 2015, 2 days before I came back to Brazil. I met Dree's dance group when I was coming from a show in Manhattan. I didn't have a script or even pretention, I was simply collecting images of everyday life. A good thing about shooting in New York is that you can walk around with a camera in your hands without any fear of being robbed or stolen. This freedom made big doors open in front of me.
The opportunity to film something beautiful was there, in the expression of their faces, in the shine of their eyes and in their charisma. I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time.
I'm very grateful to have been with that team for a couple of hours. I felt like I was part of something bigger and I'm excited about having the chance to tell the story of some true urban artists.

Essa dança, também conhecida como “getting lite” (ficando leve), incorpora outros estilos como o Harlem Shake, Chicken Noodle Soup, Aunt Jackie, Shuffling e Popping e, atualmente, tem sido comparada ao B-Boying que surgiu nos anos 80.
Existem alguns grupos de LiteFeet bem conhecidos, como o WAFFLE, Brotherhood, 2Real Boyz, Rocket and Demon, entre outros.
Os dançarinos colocam suas próprias músicas pra tocar enquanto dançam e as faixas geralmente possuem beats acelerados. Kid the Wiz, AG the Voice of Harlem, DJ Webstar e Young B são alguns dos produtores musicais especializados no estilo.
Hoje, o LiteFeet é considerado uma arte underground e dançar nos vagões é proibido. Muitos dos dançarinos são presos por policiais que estão constantemente filmando as performances para ter provas que eles estavam fazendo algo ilegal.
O filme foi gravado em Junho de 2015, dois dias antes de eu voltar para o Brasil. Encontrei o grupo de dança do Dree quando estava voltando de um show em Manhattan. Não tinha roteiro e nenhuma pretensão. Estava simplesmente captando imagens do dia a dia. Uma coisa boa sobre filmar em Nova Iorque é que você pode andar por aí com sua câmera nas mãos sem nenhum medo de ser furtado ou roubado. Essa liberdade fez com que grandes portas se abrissem para mim.
A oportunidade de filmar algo bonito estava lá, na expressão de seus rostos, no brilho de seus olhos e carisma. Tive sorte de estar no lugar certo na hora certa.
Sou muito grato por ter estado com esse time por algumas horas. Senti que era parte de algo maior e estou muito feliz por ter a chance de contar a história de verdadeiros artistas urbanos.
