Dutch multimedia artist and director Saskia Boddeke has collaborated with partner and distinguished filmmaker Peter Greenaway on several poetic multi-screen video installations over the past decade, exhibited in major museums around the world. One of these, Chtchoukine, Matisse, la Danse et la Musique, is featured in the Gallery’s new exhibition Masters of modern art from the Hermitage. A visual dance poem that explores the creation of two of Matisse’s masterpieces, the film reveals the relationship between the French painter and the visionary Russian collector of French modern art Sergei Shchukin. In this conversation, Boddeke discusses the stories and ideas behind making this homage to one of the most significant modernist painters and his Russian patron.
