Catalonian filmmaker Albert Moya has collaborated with Efthymis Filippou (the screenwriter behind
The Lobster ) to imagine a majestic and phantasmagorical dystopia built around a secret society of
alienated young men. Moya is at the forefront of a new generation of film directors who are injecting
ambitious storytelling into fashion’s motion-image field.
Baton is a darkly comedic film based on 1980s experimental cinema, with clothes provided by iconic
Antwerp-based designer Dries van Noten. The story revolves around the young men who live within
a confined and majestic palace, where its protagonists are subjected to the increasingly illogical
commands of an omnipresent Great Leader—a figure whom the men cherish, even while the
mysterious leader pushes them to bizarre extremes.
The final film in the current season of our Directors’ Cuts series, Baton is a surreal exploration of
power, obsession, and performance in the modern world.
