'John Hammond, Intolerant Champion' tells the story of John Hammond, an ordinary man who achieved extraordinary things. Hammond was born in turn-of-the century New York, a time of racial disharmony, when black and white musicians rarely played together. But Hammond heard no colour in music. He travelled the jazz clubs of Harlem, seeking undiscovered talent for his radio show. He stood almost alone in championing the cause of black and white working together. Hammond described himself as “the sometimes intolerant champion of tolerance”. Others described him simply as “the world’s greatest talent scout”.
