“The Timex American Documents project is essentially a celebration and the documentation of contemporary America. My name is Brian Schutmaat and I’m a photographer from Austin, Texas. I travel all over America looking for subject matter that moves me in one way or another and that says something about who we are as a nation. I think America is interesting to photograph because of this sense of possibility that comes from the vastness of the country and its geography. You’re not bound by anything and you can go anywhere and do anything and this is reflected in the concept of the American dream. Despite the shortcomings or the troubles that we see in America, that’s a beautiful mentality.

For the Timex American Documents project, I started as far east as you can go in the United States on the coast of Maine in Acadia National Park. Moving east to west, I photographed in Texas which is my home state and then the southwest region of the United States where you can find epic landscapes like Monument Valley and Bryce Canyon. And then I moved north up into the mountainous regions of Montana.

I took this picture of the palace theater which is in Marfa, Texas. Marfa is this small town in this very remote location that thrives in large part due to the efforts of artists and cultural institutions who make it a destination. Monument valley is epic. It’s a visual icon of America. It actually is on native land belonging to the Navajo people. They were generous enough to lend that backdrop to American film productions. They invite and allow a photographer like me to go there and relish in the splendor and I think we are all indebted. It reminds us that the identity of America is a patchwork and no one group has a monopoly on it.

I took some photos in Waterbury, Connecticut which is the historic home of American watchmaking and where Timex originated. [I] got some photos of the clock tower there that represented that heritage. Timex is an American company seeking to bring production back to the states to ensure that there is quality for their products and for the people in this country.”
