"The central idea behind the idents was to bring to life that feeling we all have when working on on a truly exceptional project: the creative journey, overcoming challenges along the way and the final, victorious burst of energy towards the summit. The visuals illustrate these 'mountains' we are all climbing towards D&AD, and industry, recognition.
The team at The Mill had an idea of how the sound design should feel - it should have real emotion, a sense of drama, be atmospheric and it should really feel like the audience is going on a journey together.
Building the music track, I knew I wouldn't be able to find the reference material within any off-the-shelf library music so I took the decision to create a bespoke music track to accompany the spots - something I had never done before. I sat down and played some notes on the piano, which gave me my starting point.
Listening to the track, you will be able to hear musical instruments, and the final result feels much more like a music track than straight sound design.
It was a really new experience for me working on this project. Creating a series of films to be used at a one-off, live event, rather than for a TV campaign meant that I had to think about every stage of the process very differently to ensure that the spots were impactful and worked for this industry audience.
