"The new Heineken ad for the UEFA Champions League was shot on a cargo ship off the coast of Istanbul by the almighty Fredrik Bond. Very little sound was recorded on set during the eight days that the shoot lasted, so we had to create most of the sound from scratch at Grand Central with our friend Raj, the SFX magician, over several unforgettable sound sessions.
From the crowd running on the dock to watch the beginning of the game, to the crew lifting the propeller out of the water and to our favourite character, Monsieur Pillow Man dancing with his mates, Raj dug inside his bottomless sounds bucket and used his ingenious mind to the top, in order to come up with an awesome sound mix.
As usual on a Heineken ad, the quest for a legendary track took us far from the shores of the expected and, after listening to thousands of songs, we stumbled upon an Italian gem from 1965, 'Viva La Pappa Col Pomodoro' by Rita Pavone. It sits perfectly with our Heineken hero and the rough faces of the sailors aboard the Jules-Edgar cargo ship.
