The creators of a flying car called Aeromobil have warned that transport networks the world over are "in crisis" and that a potential solution could be shifting road traffic into the skies.
In development for the past 14 years, a pre-prototype of Aeromobil, version 2.5, was tested on roads and flight for the first time in late 2013. In addition to stress-testing various parts, the car was successfully able to take off and land, and received airworthiness accreditation in Slovakia, where the project is based.
Aeromobil 2.5 features a set of wings that extend outwards from the car's body when it needs to take off, while a propeller at the rear helps to lift it into the sky. This iteration of the vehicle can achieve an air speed of more than 200 kilometres per hour and is able to fly for a distance of 700 kilometres.
Now the company has completed Version 3.0, featuring a carbon body, improved wings and a different on-board computing system. The team intends to publicly demonstrate this edition later in the year.
