Microsoft "New York City Board of Elections" Case Study Video

New York City has the nation’s largest base of voting citizens, and therefore the most challenging of elections requirements. So when Microsoft approached Spin Creative to produce a case study video about the NYC Board of Elections and their use of Microsoft Surface and Windows 10 we knew it was going to be an exciting project – and it was!
Using the “New York City board elections speeds election reporting” written case study as a jumping off point, the goal was the capitalize on election year interest by filming a video of the April Primary (04/19/2016) in NYC to further amplify the story and include visuals of Windows 10 in action on the Surface devices. This video serves as inspiration for the role of technology and the pride of voting.
Tasked with communicating the legacy of voting and NYC itself, Spin utilized shots of icons such as the Manhattan skyline from the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park, and the Charging Bull of Wall Street. And the piece opens with voiceover Michael Ryan, executive director of the New York City Board of Elections, speaking out the importance of voting in a democracy.
This nearly 4-minute video, deftly straddles the positive impact Microsoft Surface, Azure, and Windows 10 is making in vote tabulation for New York City, along with showcasing the importance of the voting experience through voter “I voted!” proclamations.
The video was shot over two days during the New York Presidential Primary Election in April 2016. Upon completion, the video was posted with a write up in “Start spreading the news! Surface brings efficiency and speed to New York elections” and debuted at a Microsoft conference.
Spin’s Associate Creative Director Peter Edlund is the writer on the project along with Spin Senior Producer Lisa Cooper overseeing production and Account Supervisor / Sr. Project Manager Josephine Lowry, leading the project on the account side. Sarah Beth Schooley was the Field Producer/Director during filming. The videos were captured using Spin’s Canon C500 and C100 camera packages.
