Exhibition ends 9th November 2014.
Featuring more than 100 treasures from the British Museum’s world famous Greek and Roman collection, The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece is now on show at Bendigo Art Gallery as part of the highly successful Bendigo International Collections series.
A visually stunning and thought-provoking exploration of the human form seen through Ancient Greek eyes, Bendigo Art Gallery is the exhibition’s exclusive Australian venue following its tour throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Curated by British Museum, Senior Curator, Department of Greece and Rome, Dr Ian Jenkins, the exhibition explores ideas of representation, considering how these artworks have shaped the way we think about and look at ourselves. For over 2,000 years the Greeks experimented with representing the human body in works that range from prehistoric abstract simplicity to the full-blown realism of the age of Alexander the Great.
Featuring only original objects from antiquity, the earliest object in the exhibition is 4,500 years old, dating from around 2600-2400 BC.
The British Museum, London is one of the oldest and most celebrated museums in the world with a collection of more than seven million objects exploring human history and culture from its beginnings to the present. This is the first time the British Museum has toured an exhibition to a regional Australian venue.
