The Studio @ Smoke & Mirrors have completed the VFX and grade on Discovery's new high-octane show ' Idris Elba: No Limits. This exclusive four part series will see Idris immersing himself in aerobatics, rally driving, drag racing and an attempt to break the 'flying mile' record set by Malcolm Campbell in 1927.
The launch promo focuses on Idris taking on rally driving shot on location in the UK. The director Meriem Adib had a very strong vision for the promo and in particular the grade, wanting to mix both colour and black & white.
The Studio got involved to help create the final look on the shots, in particular on the black and white shots which needed extensive sky replacement and set extension.
The Studio produced matte paintings for the skies which were then projected in Nuke onto the scene. Ground extension was needed particularly for the opening shot, various rig and lighting clean ups were required throughout the piece including logo removal on the suit and helmet Idris was wearing.
The grading was shared between Smoke & Mirrors grading department and the The Studio. The black and white shots being picked up by The Studio as roto work was required on Idris and for the integration of the sky.
The vintage colour grades and locker room scenes were graded by Mark Horrobin in resolve.
The show airs in July on Discovery.
