The message that we would like to convey through this animation is that every individual can contribute in saving the planet-even while taking a shower.
Our idea will be conveyed through a ‘Phenakistoscope’, which is a revolving disk on which drawn figures give the illusion that an object is in actual motion. For example, a horse leaping over a fence.
There will be three layers on this Phenakistoscope and each layer will have an animation accompanied with a voice over narration.
The first layer’s animation shows water flowing into a shower sink. The second layer shows a boy lathering himself with soap while leaving the tap on resulting in the water flowing into the sink in the first layer. The voice over narration for these two layers explains that as a result of leaving the tap on while lathering, water is wasted.
The third layer shows a car moving on a road, surrounded by houses with chimneys and factories emitting smoke. The voice over narration links this to the previous two layers, telling us that a 10 minute shower is similar to a 10 km car drive.
As the camera zooms out to reveal each layer, we begin to see multiple copies of the same animation spread around each layer, highlighting that every individual’s collective actions has an impact on the earth.
A hand then stops the Phenakistoscope as the voice over tells us that our planet faces a crisis if we let these actions to continue. Upon spinning the Phenakistoscope again, we see positive versions of each animation- a person cycling instead of driving the car and the boy switching off the tap while lathering, resulting in less water wastage.
