The Mill works alongside Starworks Group on a game of ‘Roshambo’ for Free People

Free People called on The Mill and Starworks Group to produce a short film that embodies the story taking place in their latest catalog. The romantic and beautifully shot film follows a pair (Christopher Abbott from HBO’s Girls and model Sheila Marquez) through a day in Brooklyn as they play ‘Roshambo’ (rock, paper, scissors) to determine their fate.

“It took an open mind for Free People to not just commission an ad assignment, but to appoint a group of smart and talented individuals to craft a story that carried the energy of their entire brand,” says The Mill’s Carl Walters. “The Starworks Group received this challenge and immediately partnered up with The Mill to create a heartfelt piece based on the age old game of “Roshambo”. The result is touching and really showcases the burgeoning talent of the editorial group here in New York, alongside a killer grade from Damo.”

Directors Jonathan Doe and Guy Aroch, working with cinematographer Carlos Veron, shot a couple wandering around the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They then turned to Mill editor, Ryan McKenna, to construct the narrative. “Was an honor to have those guys trust us to find the story here,” explains Ryan. “And it was extremely refreshing to have the running time of a short film to explore character relationship, especially with Chris and Sheila’s chemistry being as powerful as it was.”

Mill colorist Damien Van Der Cruyssen has a longstanding relationship with Carlos, and with the edit done, the two then set about perfecting the final look of the piece. “For this job, we wanted it to feel like a trailer for a film, to have a rich filmic look,” says Damien. “The piece has a lot of different times and places, so we left them to be different and show the evolution of the relationship with moments of joy and sadness that exist in any couple.”

The film will leave you left on the edge of your seat; and it’s the first in a series of short films to come that reveal the couple’s story.
