The Middle East has a deeply rooted oral tradition, famed for its poets and poetry. Ahmed Fouad Negm stands apart from all the contemporary middle eastern poets who have been oppressed and attempted to be silenced by the regimes at the time. Not only has he been contributing to this rich oral tradition for over 40 years, but also pioneering a new wave of poetry that has been and continues to be a reflection of the people of the middle east, their hopes, aspirations and grievances. Making his verse and song an integral part of modern arab identity and conscious, that has passed from generation to generation, still bringing a beacon of hope to liberation movements and middle easterners everywhere.
