John Young in conversation with Lara Nicholls at the National Gallery of Australia discussing his work Castiglione's Dream 1995 – 96.
John Young is a Melbourne based artist who arrived in Australia from Hong Kong in 1967. In the talk he refers to the famous Italian Jesuit lay brother, Giuseppe Castiglione a painter sent to the imperial court in Beijing in 1715 and stayed for 57 years.
Due to Castiglione's work, the paintings from the Qing court artists began to show a clear Western influence particularly evident in a broad light, increased use of shading, perspective, as well as the priority given to recording contemporary events.
His best-known work, a scroll 7.7 meters long showing 100 horses, ranks as one of the masterpieces of Chinese art and is clearly referenced in John Young’s Castiglione's Dream.
