Produced by Google & Tate, This Exquisite Forest is a collaborative art project conceived by Chris Milk & Aaron Koblin that lets users build animations off one another, resulting in a collection of branching narratives.
Conceived by Chris Milk & Aaron Koblin and produced by Google and Tate, the project was inspired by the surrealist game, the exquisite corpse, and its idea of collaborative creation. The project lets users create short animations that build off one another as they explore a specific theme. The result is a collection of branching narratives resembling trees, that anyone can contribute to. The project also includes a physical installation at the Tate Modern for a 6-month exhibition, where museum goers can explore the project as a life-sized projection and contribute using high-end digital tablets.
This Exquisite Forest makes use of several web technologies and Google products. On the server side, App Engine and Cloud Storage provide hosting, user accounts, dynamic scaling and storage of thousands of user-generated animations. On the client side, Google Chrome provides fast JavaScript rendering and HTML5 features, such as Canvas, SVG, Web Audio API, WebM Video, and local storage.
