zspace was proud to be involved with the Lullaby animation for the new TV show for ABC1 & ABC2, Giggle and Hoot.
Jimmy Giggle and his best buddy Hoot the Owl, live in a place where their neighbours are key characters from the ABC FOR KIDS world, including The Wiggles, Dirt girl, and Play School. It’s a world where curiosity and imagination rule - where the ordinary is extraordinary and nothing is what it seems. Shower heads are telephones, bath tubs are beds and fruit and vegetables sing.
Zspace was asked to competitively pitch for the work. After winning the pitch, we went straight into storyboarding and animatic stages. The team created the elements for each land within Giggle and Hoot’s world – the island, the desert, the sea. Erin Johnson, lead designer, spent time collating recycled projects and creating works of art with her team. Once each element was hand made, the team took photos and then animated them in After Effects. The Giggle and Hoot characters themselves were created in 3D.
Some vision was supplied of existing ABC Characters, however other characters were created by the team at Zspace (such as the Wot Wot’s) in order to compliment the hand made feel of the animations.
An additional animation called Lullaby was also commissioned by ABC TV using Giggle and Hoot’s elements. Using the same elements and look, this one minute animation features Hoot as he flies across the ABC Landscape and bids good night to his ABC friends. It features a beautiful music composition created by famed Australian recording artist, Lior.
