Concluded in December 2015 and ratified on April 22nd, 2016 in New York, the agreements made during the COP 21 are major advancements in the fight against climate change. The actions agreed upon will officially come into force by 2020.
1st pillar: Limiting global temperature rise
For an insurer, limiting global temperature rise to 2°C by 2100 is crucial: if it exceeds this limit, our planet will be difficult to protect. AXA is thus actively working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and through its engagements, the company strongly supports the transition to a low carbon economy.
2nd pillar: Resilience
Resilience is at the core of the COP 21 agreements and calls upon the capacity of cities, populations, and infrastructures to adapt to climate change. These changes concern all nations, as well as civil society and companies. This is why we work with various partners such as the World Bank and the United Nations. We particularly work with The United Nations Environment Programme in order to study the increasingly direct and indirect effects of climate change, in addition to promoting community and global economies resilience.
3rd pillar: Green Finance
Finding new insurance products along with our commitment to green investments are essential elements to our strategy in our fight against climate change. For example, we are committed to tripling our green investments in order to reach 3 billion euros by 2020. Moreover, we decided to withdraw our investments from companies highly involved in carbon-related activities. In March 2016, AXA was therefore recognized as the preferred insurance company among socially responsible investors.
It is for all these reasons that we are proud of the commitment of our employees.
This is only the beginning
