Ever since Bryan Singer directed the first X-Men film in 2000, each main title sequence for the franchise has been a journey through a graphic tunnel, which always ends up at the entrance to the Danger Room. Singer, a longtime friend and repeat client, asked us to design a main title sequence for his fourth directorial effort of the celebrated series, X-Men: Apocalypse. Singer met with Prologue and screened an early cut of the film. The story begins in ancient Egypt, where the first mutant, Apocalypse, is betrayed and ultimately entombed for thousands of years. The next scene jumps to present day. Prologue saw this as an opportunity to update the tunnel brand synonymous with the franchise while paying respect to the original idea. Prologue used the tunnel as a timeline through history, covering major events that have happened during Apocalypse’s long sleep, transporting the audience from ancient Egypt to present day. Iconography in the forward moving tunnel includes ancient hieroglyphics, Jesus carrying the cross and the Twin Towers. Interlaced are some (in Apocalypse’s mind) false idols, like Nazism, Communism, Islam and Capitalism. The false idols theme correlates with Apocalypse’s belief that the world has been praying to false Gods since his disappearance, to correct this problem, his solution is simple: cleanse the Earth.
