"Scandal" Title Sequence

Some celebration as we have created a new title sequence for one of South Africa’s most popular drama series, presenting a world of contrasts and ruthless reality.
We were tasked with the conceptualisation and creation of the new title sequence for the show. The new title sequence plays on vivid imagery to not only convey the central themes of the show, but everyday Johannesburg business life in general, a world where money is made or lost and the difference between the two is clearly defined.
The project called for capturing and projecting the essence of what the show is about in imagery and symbolism while retaining the pace and feel of the show. The setting had to be immediately identifiable as Johannesburg and the characters’ way of life in it. We developed the concept of juxtaposing images from typical Johannesburg life, between those who go for what they want and those who don’t, incorporating related aspects of the storyline to personalise the sequence. It was very important to the client that viewers instantly perceived the production and direction as of the highest international quality, a factor that lends itself to the immersion of viewers in the storyline. This had to be achieved along with the representation of the dichotomy of the South African business jungle, a place where only the strong survive.
Scandal's Producer Romano Gorlei said that Scandal has a devoted fan base that’s entwined with the lives of the characters and their actions and updating the title sequence to reflect the fast moving pace of the shows content and dramatic style is essential. We wanted the new title sequence to really represent everything that the show is about on a global level, not only the actions of the characters, but the world they live in as a whole. There is a divide of lives all co-existing in the same world of opportunities and often the only difference between them is due to the actions they take. However, fans can expect exactly the same amount of drama and scheming as the show has always delivered to the e.tv audience. “Fans need not be concerned that a change in the opening sequence means a change in the show itself, all the familiar characters will still be up to their usual intriguing ways.
