Pan Yuliang was probably the female artist of the most humble origins. Her father died when she was 1 year old, and her mother died 7 years later. Then she was sold to a brothel by her uncle at 14. Later on she, with her undistinguished appearance, attracted the attention of Pan Zanhua, a wealthy customs official. That was the turning-round point of her life. She started painting and became the first female painter to study abroad. Xu Beihong and Zhang Daqian both spoke highly of her works. Now some of her paintings worth millions.
