Power and Principles Project

The Mayor of the City of Medicine Hat was recently sanctioned having her mayoral powers stripped and salary cut in half. This punitive action came after a line of questioning became contentious during a council meeting back in 2023. The Mayor was questioning the City Manager about recent organizational changes to the City’s administration division which occurred without receiving council’s authorization for such changes. This altercation and subsequent sanctioning of the Chief Elected Official of the Municipality, highlights the underlying tensions and issues arising in municipal governance in the City of Medicine Hat and across Alberta municipalities in general.
The key objectives of the Power and Principles project proposes a comprehensive review and evaluation of existing administration bylaws and secondary legislation pertaining to the municipal governance of the City of Medicine Hat. To support this project please visit rricanada.org.
