This is a short clip from Emergence, a collaboration between animation artist Em Cooper and composer Jim Perkins.
The work debuts at the UK's Turner Contemporary gallery in April 2012, with the score performed live by soprano Red Gray as part of the installation.
The work draws on both philosophical and psychoanalytic themes and takes as its central question: what is it to come up with an idea?
Em Cooper is a contemporary artist practising a traditional oil-paint animation technique. Each frame is painted by hand on acetate or glass, before taking a photograph from above and repainting the frame for the next shot. It is laborious and slow.
Jim Perkins’ score combines traditional soprano performance with contemporary digital music technology using techniques such as real time manipulation of sound, time stretching, granulation and pitch shifts.
