In Missouri, around 260,000 people make too much money for Medicaid, but not enough for private insurance through the Affordable Care Act.
Terri Stoikes is one of them.
Stoikes lost her retail job and her husband to a disease that attacked his arteries and veins. But what barred Stoikes from getting on Medicaid was a $435 monthly pension from J.C. Penney’s, her previous work. This causes Stoikes to fall into the coverage gap: she’s too rich for Medicaid, but too poor for private insurance.
Stoikes was not just fighting with her medical predicament. She was diagnosed with cataract and diabetes. And her eyesight is failing.
