About the Work
Since being intoxicated was a way of connecting to invisible gods, Japanese sake came to be used in sacred rites. And in a time when science hadn't yet developed, it was a mystery that rice could be turned into sake by the effect of an invisible presence, that of yeast. Thus sake is a miraculous product, and even today an air of religiousness surrounds its production. We exist in constant symbiosis with an invisible presence when sake is around us.
This work, in an abstract way, depicts as “shadows” the many lives and beliefs surrounding sake that the artists encountered in their research. The word “shadow” can refer to vague forms, as well as the phenomenon produced by the effect of light.
This is an installation in which the shadows extending from the displayed sake containers mutate through interaction with visitors. The changes in the shadows can't be viewed perfectly, so you feel hints of their presence.
作品について
日本の「酒」は、酔うことで姿形の見えない神様とつながるものとして、祭事などでも用いられてきました。また、特に科学が発達していなかった頃には、酵母という目に見えない存在の力によって米が酒に変わることは神秘的だったため、酒は奇跡的な生産物であり、酒づくりはいまも常に信心深い姿勢で囲まれています。酒の周りでは、私たちは常に目に見えない存在と共生しているのです。
本作では、リサーチを通して出会った酒を取り囲むさまざまな生命や信仰を「かげ」として抽象的に描きます。「かげ」という言葉は、光によって生まれる「影」という意味をもつ他、曖昧な姿形のことも指します。
本作は、鑑賞者とのインタラクションによって、展示された酒器から伸びる影が変化するインスタレーション作品です。鑑賞者は影の変化を完全に目視することはできず、気配を通して存在を感じる体験になっています。
