I'll be honest. I've never seen Children of Men. But I've read about it and viewed a ton of stills from the movie that intrigued me. The plot, the actors, and mainly the color.
Children of Men was shot on Kodak Vision2 Expression 500T 5229 negative format, so needless to say, most of its character is inherited from the analog vibe of that film stock.
Recreating that look on a 8-bit Sony Cine2 digital clip can be challenging to say the least. I wanted to put myself against the wall and see what happens. I usually function well under pressure situations and this was one of those. There were SO MANY subtleties that had to be considered.
I am not advocating using LUTs at all, but this is one of those situations where DaVinci Resolve's film looks LUTs come in handy. Precisely the Rec709 Kodak 2383 D55. It is one of Resolve's own film emulation LUTs which can do wonders to your footage if you want to have a "film look" foundation as a base to build on.
Only make sure to control your exposure, contrast and saturation adjustments before the LUT as it will affect your image quite drastically.
