This project was a labor of love for us. When Columbia & LCD approached us to do a series of 80's-era-infomercial spots for the new record we jumped at the chance. We designed this rube goldberg machine with James in mind. It was built almost entirely out of vintage recording studio and musical equipment as well as various salvaged parts. The mechanism was designed to turn on the stereo system (which served as the main element in the machine), drop the record, and play it over those Fisher speakers. Aside from being fully functional, it also completed its entire task within 25 seconds to fit within the broadcast runtime of :30-:45.
In addition to shooting s16mm film and processing the entire gate, we also salvaged a vintage tube camera- essentially what broadcast television was filmed and transmitted on before digital and after film had become time inefficient for broadcast. Most of these cameras that still exist either don't work or have no digital infustructure to test if they work. We painstakingly did many hours of research to find and assemble various parts (apparently which exist largely in mid-west pennsylvania and south New Jersey). We rigged the old analog camera to record digitally and shot our old weird infomercial on old weird infomercial cameras.
All that to say, it was an incredibly fun labor of love. Enjoy.
