This is a self made film about the Universe and what it actually looks like. I've wanted to make it for years but never had the VFX skills to be able to set a short, educational film in space. The pandemic hit and while I had little work, I had more free time and that meant something I didn't have the time to learn before, became an option.
The main reason I wanted to make it was that I have two kids under four now and if ever there was a time to start making films I could be proud to show them, it was now. If they were something they'd also learn from I would be over the moon.
As an avid space and science enthusiast I knew it had to be about some of the wonders of the Universe but I really wanted the film to be different. I want my kids to be able to enjoy it but it would be great if adults who aren't necessarily interested in space could too. I felt like for me that meant fixing how daunting and overwhelming the Universe can be, so that's the focus of the film, to give anyone an image of the Universe they can hold and connect with.
I tried to leverage my skills as a DoP and filmmaker and make something that was cinematic too, that helped to bridge the gap where my VFX skills were still rough around the edges.
One of the hardest aspects was the fact I spent so long making sure I was plotting the exact positions and sizes of the galaxies in The Local Group accurately. I wanted anyone to be able to enjoy it but that included astrophysicists too!
