Canada Day

Today is Canada Day.
We are thankful to be here. Almost our entire current team is from different countries. We come from very different backgrounds, and yet somehow we’ve been welcomed into this land that is not ours, and call it our home.
As we began to work on something for this occasion, we wanted to reflect Canada’s motto “A Mari Usque Ad Mare” which is officially translated as “From Sea to Sea” or “D’un océan à l’autre” from the Latin translation of Psalm 72:8:
“May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth!”
The reason for this motto is that Canada borders three oceans: the Pacific on the west, the Arctic to the north, and the Atlantic on the east. The Beaufort Sea in the Arctic Ocean lies off the northwest border of the country.
But as we look at Canada, its history and the world around us today, remembering the verses before it seems far more important:
“May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!”
And that’s the verse we are thinking about today.
We will continue to be thankful, but we also know that we have a lot to do, starting by looking at our own hearts, as we continue to learn to do good, seek justice, correct oppression; with big and small acts of kindness and love – “From Sea to Sea”.
