DJI Pocket 2 macro short film
The idea of this experimental macro video was born from lack of traveling due to certain events in 2020 and desire to showcase the capability of the awesome Pocket 2 camera as not only a great blogging device, a good b-roll camera, or super gimbal for travel, architecture, etc short films, but also an amazingly capable machine for creative experiment right at your home.
We use different inks, alcohol, soaps, and other different mixture of household chemicals for creating liquid art of flow and movements.
It was a challenging but really fun project as we have never shot macro with inks before nor have we done it with Pocket 2 (I believe this type of video with ink is the first to be shot on this device). It took us 3 weeks of pure experiments, try and error, to get the right effect with inks and chemicals.
And 1.5 weeks of shooting after that, using DJI Pocket 2 camera with and without a macro lens to gather more than 7 hours of footage (690 GB of clips).
The post-production alone took 1.5 weeks for the entire Origin short film.
An interesting fact that only about 1.6% of all shot clips went into the film.
Surprisingly, it took less effort to CC and grade those shots, since the actual image was very good to start with. I use Davinci Resolve 17 beta which has a Color Warper tool. Some noise reduction was used as well as a glow plugin to give the color a bit more “pop”.
No significant color manipulation has been necessary since all colors were done right in the camera.
There had been some challenges shooting the film. First, was the camera, especially with a macro lens on, required a super close proximity to the subject, meaning it was quite difficult to get pipettes or syringes below it. Because of that, the camera itself might be visible with some darker and glossy base substances.
But also we had some real advantages using the device. For example, the ability to digitally zoom in and out, not only as an additional movement but also as compositional benefits. Gimbal movement left and right (that otherwise would require some expensive equipment). 4K, d-log setting gave us the ability to bring up colors to life. High frame rate for the slow-motion part of the film.
For us, this project represents the possibility to showcase that this camera is very versatile and could be used in many situations including some creative shots like those. We hope to inspire creatives to think outside of the box in using the Pocket 2 and create stunning experiments.
