Artist Matthew Day Jackson has designed a furniture collection featuring his own Formica surface that replicates, to scale, the surface of the moon.

Presented during Milan Design Week, the surface has been used to make a series of dining tables and chairs with curvy cartoonish frames.

The series is the result of a collaboration between Jackson, Finnish design manufacturer Made by Choice and Formica Group, and is named Kohlo, after the Finnish town that first inspired Jackson.

Jackson, who has long used Formica laminate in his artwork, said the collaboration came about due to "chance, circumstance and serendipity".

During a visit to Finland in 2018 in preparation for a show at the Serlachius Museums, out of curiousity, Jackson visited the Formica factory located in Kolho. By chance, he also met Niclas Ahlstrom, a relative of Maire Gullichsen (Ahlström) who co-founded Artek with Alvar Aalto.
