Biography
Noura is an Egyptian 2D animator studying MA Animation at UAL: London College of Communications. Driven by a passion for the age-old art of moving hand-drawn images, and eager to enhance her abilities in order to excel, not only in technical skill, but in broadening her perspectives and stretching out everlasting curiosity.
Director statement:
Emblematic Space is a 2D animated short film inspired by William Kentridge, it is about the idea of the studio, and what is represents to Kentridge. The idea behind the film is to explore the depths of possibilities that lie within the artist’s brain, and how the studio assists in bringing these fragments of thoughts to life - ultimately finding meaning in not only the artistic outcome, but meaning in ourselves and our world as well. Throughout the many phases of production, I was aiming to achieve a specific balance between Kentridge’s iconic aesthetic style, and a surreal imaginative narrative that would best express his words.
The music of the film closely follows the flow of the visuals in a way that seeks to only add an expressive dimension. The composer has chosen to craft a melody that takes the role of a leitmotif associated with the studio, we hear that melody four times in total, once in each visual environment and one last time with the credits. The animation technique of the film is traditional 2D frame-by-frame, however animated digitally on ToonBoom Harmony 17. In addition, a fair amount of compositing was created in post-production using Adobe AfterEffects.
