Biography
Yian Zhou is a Chinese independent animator current based in London. In her 2d-animation work, she seems to balance different art styles with meaningful narrative, and also love to explore cinematic skills used in animation. She enjoys expressing human emotions and connections through perception of everyday life.
Director statement max 250 words:
Doll’s Love is a 2d short animation inspired by Paula Rego’s artwork ‘war’ which stored in TATE Modern. In Paula Rego's works, animals are often used as protagonists, such as rabbits and storks. besides, the beast of paintings which depict the energy of the original female impress the audience, abortion-themed paintings caused many viewers to feminism.
The style of dark fairy tales and the feminist ideology behind artworks become keywords of doll's love. I combined her painting style and profound meaning to rebuild a story based on her words about a female rabbit satisfying the fantasy of love by manipulating inanimate dolls. Shots and narratives are the part I want to challenge myself in the short film.
Techniques used for film are line draft in Tvpaint and color with pastel brush in Photoshop, which is similar to Paula Rego common painting tools. It also conveys a sense of authenticity through strong and appealing texture. In music, mysterious and strange style is selected to create a dark fairy tale atmosphere
